Glenn Greenwald — a journalist whose work I really don’t like — is the subject of controversy this week after videos of him engaged in saucy sex play leaked online. And the word “saucy” in that sentence is carrying a structural load several times greater than the Hoover Dam; in fact, I would like to nominate my use of the word “saucy” just now for the Nobel Prize in Euphemisms. I won’t relay the description of the video, because 1) Even Greenwald — who truly is an asshat — does not deserve to have his private life made public, 2) I’m sure as fuck not going to watch the thing to confirm the accuracy of the description, and 3) Reading that description will not improve your day, make you more informed, or make you want to eat anything for about a week. But suffice it to say: Egads, folks. Ay — and I cannot stress this enough — caramba. If the characters in Heart of Darkness had traveled several more miles down the river, they might have encountered something similar to what’s alleged to be in the video.

Despite the fact that the video seems to contain consenting adults engaged in legal (if just barely1) behavior, Greenwald’s enemies are trying to use the content to discredit him. And because Greenwald is gay, and the video depicts gay…sex??? (is what’s described even sex?), some are pointing to the video as evidence that gay men are unsound degenerates — this Daily Caller article claims that certain “identities” are incompatible with cultural conservatism and states: “Tolerance is not a virtue”.
