I would guess that while the kind of people who are afraid of self-checkout (and technology in general) represent a small percentage of the overall population, they are a much larger percentage of "people who call their representative".

C'mon, you're not this naive. The store's business is to turn a profit for its owners, giving the customers what they want is a secondary concern at best.

I was a pimply teen working at a grocery store when they first introduced self-checkout. Customers HATED them: "Unexpected item in the bagging area: please remove item; Item removed from bagging area: please replace item."

Maybe times have changed and today's shoppers fear human contact more than they resent taking orders from a machine, but let's be honest here. Stores want self checkout because it saves them labor costs.
